Driving Digital is key to Public Sector Transport Commercialisation

Matt Goodstadt, Managing Director, Transport, Civica discusses how technology is key to public sector transport commercialisation and how efficient transport systems have a critical socio-economic role in the UK. Change is coming in public sector transport. Many organisations are viewing increasing demand and tighter financial restrictions as an opportunity to innovate. This is crucial as efficient transport systems have a critical socio-economic role in the UK. Fundamentally, vehicles must be available to empty local residents’ bins, ensure social and health care workers can reach the elderly patients they care for and ambulances continue to run. We cannot afford for this to stop. However, time is running out for public sector transport leaders who need to fill a widening financial hole. While many transport providers have already implemented cost cutting measures, organisations need to implement digital transformation as part of their wider strategy to cut costs and to drive commercialisation. Pursuing a digital strategy has helped many local authorities do just this - also helping them to better serve citizens and streamline processes. In fact, nearly half of the public-sector transport managers in a Civica survey agree that technology is vital in creating a successful commercialisation model. However, many transport providers simply do not have the right technology to enable commercialisation. This is not about forcing the public to pay ever greater charges for services, but more seeking out new revenue streams, which link to areas of corporate strategy and public need.

Finance workers on business trips have most need for speed

Finance workers on business trips rate speed and efficiency more highly than any other sector, The Heathrow Express Business Travel Insights Report has revealed. Seventy-two per cent of business travellers in the finance sector rated speed of journey as essential when booking flights; 70% rated speed and efficiency through the airport as essential when making flight bookings, while 81% rated speed and efficiency as essential when choosing transfer travel to and from the airport. While business travellers from every sector, including finance, rated personal safety as the number one priority when booking flights and accommodation and all business travellers rated speed as most important when it came to making airport transfer choices, finance workers rated speed the highest of all across all their business travel choices. The state of the nation report on business travel, commissioned by Heathrow Express surveyed business travellers from across the UK, Germany and the US and also found that on average, finance sector workers take 2.5 domestic business trips and 2.6 international business trips a year that are, on average, 5.4 nights long. Forty-three per cent of business travellers in finance book business trip themselves with a further 46% booked by assistants or internal business departments. However, 14% reported that over the past three years there was a growing reliance on business travel agents and travel management companies. Fraser Brown, Director of Heathrow Express said: “These findings tell us getting from A to B as quickly as possible is key to finance travellers which is why as well as offering excellent customer service and a premium on board experience, Heathrow Express’ focus is to provide a reliable service connecting London and Heathrow in just 15 minutes. This provides customers with the fastest route between central London and Britain’s hub airport.”

Common Problems with Used Heavy Trucks

For many businesses and individuals, used heavy trucks can be a cost-effective means of purchasing a vehicle, however, as Dunlop Sterling explains, there are a number of issues to look out for. Heavy duty trucks are very expensive and are certainly a big investment for many people, especially when they absolutely need it for their jobs. While purchasing brand new trucks may seem like the best option in terms of reliability and efficiency, they can quickly skyrocket over a conservative budget that most people are willing to spend, which leaves the options of used heavy trucks. There are many safe and reliable used heavy trucks available on the market but it’s important to know the common problems that these types of trucks have, so that you can avoid purchasing a model that will require constant repairs. Rust As is the case with many used cars, used heavy trucks also face the problem of rust. While some truck bodies will not show obvious signs of rust, it’s very important to do a thorough check to make sure the integrity of the vehicle body is perfectly intact. If there are problematic areas that have succumbed to rust build up, it’s recommended to continue your search for a good used truck. The biggest problem with rust is the fact that the truck becomes weak in particular parts and the rust will simply continue to spread until the truck is no longer useable. This is especially dangerous with large areas of rust since it may cause parts of the vehicle to fall off, making it extremely dangerous while out on the road. Leaks The most common places for used heavy trucks to have leaks are the engine and the radiator, both of which should always be in perfect working order. Oil leaks from the engine pose several different threats, which is why many professional strongly stress the fact that vehicles leaking oil should never be used for extended periods of time, they should in fact be repaired immediately upon discovery. There are several problems that occur with oil leaks, not only is it bad for the environment, it can damage other parts of the truck over time (especially rubber hoses), not to mention the fact that it can also catch on fire, especially if it’s dripping on the exhaust system.
